What is a treatment log?
A treatment log — also known as service history — is a structured record of all treatments an asset (e.g. a car) has undergone. This includes products used, date of treatment, the installer who carried out the work, and any images.
Why does it matter?
The treatment log serves three critical purposes:
- Warranty documentation: If you can document that service intervals have been observed, your warranty claim is stronger. If you cannot, you risk the manufacturer rejecting the claim.
- Customer experience: A customer who can see the full history of their car — what has been done, when, and by whom — feels well looked after. That creates loyalty.
- Car sales: A documented service history increases credibility and the sale price. The buyer can verify that the car has been treated correctly.
What should be logged?
- Product name and manufacturer
- Treated area (e.g. "Full undercarriage including wheel arches")
- Date and time
- Installer name
- Before/after images
- Any notes (e.g. "Mark on boot lid noted on arrival")
Digital vs. manual
Manual — an Excel file or Word document — is better than nothing. But it is hard to share, easy to delete and impossible to verify.
A digital system like Detaily logs all treatments automatically as part of the visit workflow. The installer uploads images directly from their phone, and the customer can see the history in their portal immediately.
